Currently I am in the middle of taking my qualifying exam. This exam includes completing five written examinations, one from each committee member, followed by an oral examination. Needless to say, I have spent the past month preparing and organizing for this exam. For this report, one of the written exam questions involving the variational nature of the Moment Method has been linked to this report. The complete report should be viewed for all the details. However, Figure 1 which compares Galerkin vs non-Galerkin formulations in an example proposed by Richmond [4](see link for reference), provides some insight into this problem. That is, it indicates that by choosing the basis and testing functions appropriately, far-field non-Galerkin solutions can prove to be just as accurate as the Galerkin formulation.
