SEPTEMBER 1997 REPORT FOR
W. CHARLES SYMONS, III
As usual, the main priority for the month of August was the submission of
a preliminary abstract for the Pittsburgh Conference entitled NEAR-FIELD
SCANNING OPTICAL MICROSCOPIC IMAGING FROM X-BAND TO NEAR-IR. Once
the Pittcon abstract was submitted, a near-field experiment in the X-band
of the electromagnetic spectrum was discussed with Dr. Keith Whites in
the Electrical Engineering department. At this point, the experiment will
be done as soon as the experimental design is finalized. In conjunction
with this near-field experiment, the current NSOM moment method code is
being updated and improved in order to generate data to be compared to
the physical results.
Additionally, during the month of August, engineers from Silicon Graphics
visited the lab to discuss requirements for the possible purchase of an
Origin 2000 system. As a result of this meeting, I will receive a user
account on both a 32 cpu system and a 64 cpu system in order to run
parallel codes and compare the performance of the Origin 2000 systems to
the current Convex Exemplar system.
