Patient Instructions

1. Before using the Basal Thermometer to predict ovulation, the patient should first read the package insert thoroughly.

2. When not in use, the Basal Thermometer should be placed in its protective case in a cool place. Before and after use, the thermometer should be immersed in rubbing alcohol. When washing the thermometer, use soap and cold water. Hot water or any other excess heat may affect the accuracy of the thermometer.

3. Shake down the thermometer by holding the top end firmly between the thumb and forefinger and using a full arm motion to swing downward. Do this until the reading is below 96 degrees.

4. Take the basal temperature at the same waking time in the morning. The basal body temperature (BBT) should be taken for a full 5 minutes. Any activity may raise the BBT so it should be taken before getting out of bed.

For Oral Use: Place the thermometer well under the tongue. Close the lips and keep them closed until thermometer is removed.

For Rectal Use: Coat thermometer with lubricant and insert gently, leaving one-half of the stem exposed.

For Vaginal Use: No lubricant is necessary. Insert thermometer gently, leaving one-half to two-thirds of the stem exposed.

5. Hold the thermometer with the top end in right hand so that the numbers are on the lower side. The scale lines should be on the upper side. Rotate the thermometer slowly back and forth until the mercury can be seen between the scale lines and numbers. Do not hold the bulb while reading or the mercury may move while you are trying to read the thermometer.

6. Record your reading and what day of the cycle it is. A chart is provided in the package insert for this purpose.
