HEMDETECT INSTRUCTIONS TO THE PATIENT
1. Test is conducted after a preparatory period which may vary depending
on the type of medication
that you are taking. Certian medication such as asprin, indomethacin, phenylbutazzone,
reserpine,
corticosteroid, and nonsteroidial anti-inflammatory drugs can cause gastrointestinal
bleeding and
thus give positive reactions. On the advice of the physician these medications
might be temporarily
disconinued for 7 days prior to and during the test period. Vitamin C when
taken in amounts greater
than 250 mg per day have been shown to cause false negative results. Rectal
medications
(suppositories) also may interfere with these tests and should be discontinued
with the approval of
the physician. If you are taking any iron containing medication, please
consult you physician.
For at least 2 days before and all during the test period described below
it is essential that you
do not eat any raw meat or rare meat. You should also avoid raw: broccoli,
cauliflower, radishes,
cantaloupe, parsnips or turnips which might give false positive results.
However, you may eat lettuce,
pruines, grapes and apples and also cooked fruit and vegetables. Cereals
and Well cooked fish
and poultry are also acceptable. If any of the recommended foods are known
to cause you any
discomfort, please consult your physician.
2. Before starting each of the test, write your first name, last name
and date on the front of the
test cards being used. Start the test only after having been on the above
listed restricted diet for
at least two days and having followed your physicians instructions regarding
your medication.
Please Note: Stool specimens may be collected from the tolliet bowl, from
the toilet paper or caught
in a clean cup. Thin smears of stool should be collected from three different
areas of the stool from
three consecutive mowel movements if possible. (Samples from the outside
of the stool are most
likely to reflect the condition of the lower colon, while specimens taken
from inside of the stool are
more likely to reflect the conditions of the upper gastro-intestinal tract).
Because bleeding may be
intermittent it is important to collect specimen from three bowel movements,
preferably from
consecutive ones.
Interfering Conditions: A specimen should not be collected by the patient
when
there are bleeding hemorrholds, bleeding from constipation, if there are
bleeding cuts on your hand,
or if you are experiencing menstrual bleeding. Keep hands and test area
clean and free of blood to
avoid false positive reactions. 3. Open the front of the card " PATIENT
OPEN HERE, WHEN READY TO USE"-(do not openthe back of the test card!)-and
use one of the enclosed pointed applicators to select a very small samples
of stool and apply a vary thin smear on the first of three windows in the
test area(A).
4. Use a new applicator to select a second sample from onother area of
the same stool and apply a
thin smear over the second test area(B) on the same test slide.
5. Use a third new applicator to select a third sample from another area
of the same stool and apply
a thin smear over the last unused test area ( C ) on the same slide. Close
covor.
6. With another test slide repeat steps 3,4, and five with each of the
next two bowl movements
if possible.
7. Return the three completed test slides ( 3 samplings on each slide)
to your physician or laboratory
only in the special envelope provided as directed. Do so as soon as possible
and no more than 4 days should elapse between the first sample being taken
and the transport of the test slide back to the physician or laboratory.
The test slides must be protected from heat, sunlight, fluorescent light,
excess humidity and volatile chemicals ( such as household cleaners). Refrigeration
is not required. If mailed in USA: use only the special lined envelopes
supplied to you and which meet US postal regulations.
