ASRG SETI Data Files on U
Kentucky ASRG SETI Data
When new files are collected from an interesting source, such as one in
the direction of a recent supernova or a gamma ray burst, a file announcement
is posted here. Click on the file name to show the URL, then right-click
on the URL and select Save Link As to download the file. Post a Downloaded
message under the file name when you download it, so others do not needlessly
download the same file. Post a Completed message under the Downloaded message
when you complete the analysis, and tell others in that message what chirps
or other techniques were applied to the data during analysis. The completed
message is used to alert sysops so the file can be deleted from the server
and the space freed for new files. Remember, the computers collecting the
data detect continuous narrow signals with a small frequency drift very
efficiently. Any such signal is probably an interference identified in the
known interferences log. We are most interested in having students look
for complex patterns that would not integrate over time into a stronger
signal.
ASRG SETI Project Discussion on U
Kentucky ASRG SETI
This group is for discussion of the ASRG SETI project and software, as well
as all aspects of SETI of interest to the project participants.
Specific discussions related to open source software projects like SETIEasy can be accessed through the Open Source Software page.
ASRG Experiments
These pages report results of tests done by project participants using data
from the telescopes.
Data are retained and analyzed for approximately the past month.
We try to concentrate our efforts on the most recent files because any signals
there are the most likely to be confirmable by other stations. You can see
where we have been looking lately by monitoring the discussion group servers.
To provide some organization in the file listing system, there are two distinct message boards. We are using news-type systems (but web-based) at U Kentucky ASRG SETI Data to "announce" the availability of new data files for analysis. 28 Mb (one hour long) files, 7 Mb (15 minutes long) and 2 Mb (5 minutes long) files are listed. Data are recorded in different length files, but the same data are not in two files.
Users can determine file size from the file names: one-hour (28 Mb) files have names in the format date_time_utc.wav, where time is the starting time of the one hour period, while the 15-minute files (7 Mb) and 5-minute (2 Mb) have names in the format date_time_utc_1.wav, date_time_utc_2.wav, date_time_utc_3.wav, etc., where the number indicates how many quarter-hours have past since recording began. 5-minute files are becoming dominant on U Kentucky ASRG SETI Data. You can also get a complete list of files and their sizes on the servers by deleting the file name from the hyperlinks. Discussion of the ASRG SETI project and software are conducted on a different group, U Kentucky ASRG SETI, to keep discussion posts from getting lost in sequences of data files.
More information is available on posting on the Where We've Been Looking Lately page.
Note for those who have expressed an interest in discussing SETI-related topics: most such discussion occur on the newsgroups sci.astro.seti and alt.sci.seti
